Protocols to extract ulvan published

The cell wall polysaccharide ulvan was isolated from two species of green seaweed collected along the Swedish west coast, Ulva lactuca and Ulva compressa. Two different extraction protocols were developed and compared: extraction with hot water followed by enzymatic purification, and extraction with hydrochloric acid.

The total carbohydrate content of the extracted ulvan was in the range 76–79 % w/w. The extraction protocol, as well as the seaweed species used in the extraction, had a strong impact on the purity, degree of sulfation, molecular weight, and monosaccharide composition.
